About James Beverly
For more than a decade, Dr. Beverly has invested his time, energy, and resources into this District. As the owner of MidTowne Vision Center on Pio Nono Avenue — which was nominated for the 2011 and 2012 Small Business of the Year by Macon Chamber of Commerce — he has been committed to building a small business that will provide jobs and training to the people of this community. Specializing in children’s eye care, Dr. Beverly provides free annual eye exams for children in Bibb County’s Headstart Program and has worked in impoverished communities on mission trips. His plan for a better District builds upon these experiences and stresses the need for obtaining state funds for the District to invest in infrastructure, crime prevention, and early childhood education.
James Theodore Beverly began his early education in the West Baltimore Public Schools. During this time the city of Baltimore was affected by the economic transformation; going from an industry based economy to a technology based economy. This change left many without jobs as stable iron mill manufacturing and blue collar industries shut down, modernized or moved elsewhere. James became acutely aware of the shifts from stable communities to neighborhoods and families increasingly affected by violence, crime, drugs and gangs.
After a murder occurred in his neighborhood, James’ family decided to make the move to East Baltimore. With the trials of adjusting to a new neighborhood, new surroundings and new classmates, James found his place at East Baltimore’s Polytechnic Institute and went on to graduate from high school.
While at Poly, James excelled in academics and athletics. His high school achievements led to a football and lacrosse scholarship to Guilford College in North Carolina. While attending Guilford, James asked himself, “How best can I serve people?&rdqo; He made the decision to become a doctor.
After completing his undergraduate degree, James went on to attend the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, graduating in 1994. He was the president of his Optometry class and distinguished as a lifetime member of the Gold Key Honor Society. While in college James was called to service of the church and looked to study theology. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Seminary School.
He later attended Wesleyan College in Macon and graduated in the top percentile with a Master’s in Business Administration.
He continued to increase his skill set by studying Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and graduating with a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University in 2010. At Harvard Dr Beverly was awarded the Ash Fellowship for displaying potential in democratic governance and Leadership.
Dr. Beverly began his first private Optometric practice in Georgia in 1996. As many, first time business owners and health care providers realize, running a private practice business requires more than the things learned in a classroom. As a new small business owner he experienced the economic difficulties, staff managerial issues, billing and collections woes. Despite these challenges, James was able to learn and grow from the experience as well as began to prepare for the future. He managed to take his business through its life cycle to the current year when the Chamber of Commerce has nominated his Business for “Small Business of the year award 2011.”
The future for James Beverly and his family began in Macon, Georgia. Once moving to Macon, Dr. Beverly opened Goggles Eye Care for Kids and MidTowne Vision Center on Pio Nono Avenue. Dr. Beverly is certified by Emory University to perform pre-and post operative care for LASIK laser eye surgery.
As Dr. Beverly observed the changes in health care, he saw the need to better educate himself and his community on the relationship between government, business, employment, and community growth.
In June 2006 Dr. Beverly graduated from Wesleyan College earning his Master’s of Business Administration. He went on to receive a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University in 2010.
James Beverly’s civic involvement is a reflection of his overall concern for all facets of the community in Middle Georgia. Dr. Beverly offers Free Eye Screenings to students the Bibb County Headstart Program. James also provided eye care to indigent populations in Northern and Eastern Africa and the Caribbean during multiple independent Mission Trips. He has also coordinated with the office of Workforce Development to provide employment for the youth of Middle Georgia. James Beverly also co-founded the Mosaic Development Group to build affordable housing in East Macon.
